Plex running slow

I have been such a satisfied Plex user for many years now, and started out on Mac but moved to Windows 7 earlier this year.

I'm literally looking at my Media Server right now and I asked to update it, but it's just stuck there with no loaded movies. It works fine with my TV shows alas still slow thoughso I don't know if it has to do with the amount of content. But it just stops updating without having loaded all of my movies. Should I just keep updating? That wouldn't be preferable if I had to repeat the update every time I add new movies. If you've recently added more movies you are likely just reaching the point of memory exhaustion.

The main problem now is, that it loses connection all the time, so I'm thinking it may be my router that is too slow? I've never had any issues streaming locally while others are streaming remotely, regardless of the number of users. If you're saying you bought a cheap wifi router and your Plex server is on wireless Connect your Desktop via ethernet to the same router and check performance.

The second test should eliminate wireless issues with your router and test whether your NAS is just to slow to handle all the content in your library since your library is now being hosted by your desktop.

I still don't know what to do. I find it odd that you're told your PC is at the bare minimum. I typically see streams during high utilization, and there's never an issue. Once I get past 4 streams, there is a little buffering for remote users. Connect your Desktop via ethernet to the same router and check performance 2 Connect Nas to router via ethernet. I would at least try the above suggestions before buying a new router.Joinsubscribers and get a daily digest of news, geek trivia, and our feature articles. The Plex experience centers around two apps: the server which holds your media and the client the app with which you watch your media, usually on your TV, your phone, or other set-top box.

All the heavy lifting happens on the server side—the streaming, the transcoding of the streaming when necessary, etc. If you experience choppy playback, regular buffering, and other similar issues, optimization can save the day. The catch is that the optimized video is stored as a separate video file with your other media and, you guessed it, takes up space. While you can jump right in and optimize your entire library with only a few clicks once you know where to lookthe optimization process is both CPU and storage intensive.

To get started with optimization, open up the web dashboard of your Plex Media Server. Select a video library. When you find the media you want to optimize, hover over the entry and click on the three dots that appear in the lower right corner. Where you store the media is completely a personal choice. A popup window will indicate that your media is undergoing optimization.

If you have more than one item in the queue, you can drag and drop the individual entries to move them to the top of the queue. The transcoding of just this one film took approximately 20 minutes on our multi-core server. Once the conversion is complete, we can take a peek to see how the file size changed. In our case, the original file was a p video with a file size of 8. Both our network and our CPU have lighter loads to carry when we want to stream it from afar. The only thing to be aware of here is that when you delete an optimization rule, you delete all the optimized versions you made with it.

It takes a little bit to get the hang of optimizing things to pin down exactly what settings work best for your needs, but once you have some solid optimization rules in place the whole experience is fire and forget—no more stuttering video or buffering.

The show or movie will sit there loading, and then it will say the file is unavailable. The issue also happens before any files are accessed it happens as early as the menu screens. The menus and videos in the browser load fast and smoothly.

I believe it has something to do with how Plex is being accessed over my WiFi router - but again, the signals are fine no interferenceand the speed is fine as well Mbps download, 10 Mbps upload from all around the house. Any help would be most appreciated! Let me know if I can provide any information or specific logs. Removing them solved my issue.

Try checking your network adapters, maybe it will help. It sounds like direct access is not possible in the local network. When I got home I went into Device Manager and uninstalled all of the network and virtual network items. I then rebooted Plex and everything seems to be running smooth. It is weird, however, that this issue just began occurring out of the blue rather than being triggered by something. It could have been a Plex update that triggered it?

Not sure. Either way, for now - it seems to be resolved! This topic was automatically closed 90 days after the last reply. New replies are no longer allowed.

Define an exception from this protection for the domain plex. Hi all, When I got home I went into Device Manager and uninstalled all of the network and virtual network items. Thanks so much! The third-generation Amazon Fire TV Stick, while an improvement on its predecessor, is not a particularly powerful device and complaints about slow speeds are not uncommon.

The latest Fire TV Stick added Alexa voice remote as a default feature and ramped up the processor from dual core to quad core. It now uses a Mediatek CPU designed for low-end tablets. Third-generation Firesticks include a basic version and a higher-end 4K one, both of which come with Alexa voice remote.

In step with the performance upgrade, Amazon also updated to a newer version of Android and an overhauled the interface with a more modern design. Those changes take a toll on performance, utilizing much of the added power from the new CPU. But power users—particularly those who have installed and frequently use Kodi—may notice performance degradation over time. Fire TV Stick performance issues can take the form of:. Many of these tweaks will make a minuscule impact on their own, but together they add up to a significant power boost and can speed up your firestick.

Also check to make sure the wall adapter uses the correct voltage for your country. Just like a computer or phone, an occasional restart can help unclog a struggling Fire TV Stick and breathe new life into it. You can either unplug the device and plug it back in again, or restart from Fire OS. For the latter, follow these instructions:. This may seem obvious, but apps and add-ons take up space in memory and can run in the background, hogging up resources.

To uninstall Fire TV apps, do the following:. Note that certain apps come pre-installed on Fire TV and cannot be uninstalled. To do so, follow the exact same steps as you would to uninstall the app as laid out above. This time, instead of selecting Uninstall, choose Force stop. It might not be clear that anything has happened at first, but the app will no longer be weighing down your Fire Stick. Perform these actions in the order they appear: Clear data, then Clear cache.

The Fire TV Stick has quite a bit of bloatware enabled by default. Turning off these features can also improve your privacy. To disable data monitoring, do the following:.

App notifications can not only be annoying, they impact performance to a slight degree. Fire TV allows users to disable notifications entirely or on an app-by-app basis. Access your notification settings by doing the following:. Toggle on Do not interrupt by clicking on it, or click App Notifications to toggle off notifications from individual apps. This means your ISP cannot see the contents of your internet traffic nor its source or destination, so it cannot discriminate based upon what you stream and from where.

VPNs come with a wealth of other benefits as well, including more privacy, better security, and the ability to unblock geographically restricted websites and services, including many streaming providers like Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now, and BBC iPlayer. One of the things people love the most about Plex is how streamlined the experience is—and that streamlining is centered around their Plex accounts, access to the remote Plex central server, and how that ties all their settings and user experience together. But for that experience to work, your computer needs to phone home to Plex and authenticate. Thankfully, there are two easy ways around the problem: tweaking how Plex uses the authentication system and, in special cases, falling back on the DLNA system as a backup.

Before we proceed, there are two very important caveats. First and foremost, you must make these changes in advance. You have to be online and logged into your Plex account to make changes to your local Plex Media Server. There is no way around this. Click on the wrench icon in the upper right corner to access your Settings menu.

You can populate the box with two different types of entries. A much easier way to approach it is to use a netmask, which is, simply, a way to specify multiple addresses.

For example, if your local network uses IP addresses with the format Your local Plex server will stay open for business even without an active internet connection to phone home.

In addition to disabling local authorization, as we did in the last section, there is an additional trick we want to take advantage of. DLNA is an older standard that allows local devices on your network to connect to each other for media access. The Best Tech Newsletter Anywhere.

While Kodi is easy to set up, it can be difficult to find the root of some problems that occur. One of the most common issues Kodi users encounter is app slowdowns and lagging.

This can happen when trying to connect to media, or in some cases, just when navigating the menus. This should make your Kodi software faster than ever and allow you to use Kodi as it was originally intended. Please consider the law, victims, and risks of piracy before downloading or streaming copyrighted material without permission. There are several different reasons that your Kodi installation could be running slowly. Firstly, get everyone in your household to stop using the internet and run a network speed test. Pay attention to your download speed. Netflix recommends a speed of at least 3 megabits per second Mbps for standard definition content, 5Mbps for HD content, and 25 Mbps for 4K content.

Try playing a YouTube video at p to see if it loads properly. Even the slowest internet connections should manage to buffer this almost immediately. Next, try watching content from a different source. Even though Kodi can be installed on many different platforms, not every device on each platform has the same specifications. For instance, some Android cell phones are less powerful than others.

If your buffer size is too large or your cache size is too small, this can lead to a significant slowdown on your device. Limited computer memory this is often an issue for those running Kodi on mobile devices and streaming devices like fire stick, so when you mention this one, also talk about and link to removing Kodi builds and unused addons.

The tips above should have given you an idea as to the root cause of your slowdown problem so all that remains is to rectify it. Network problems are more difficult to address since you have a limited amount of control, but beyond extending your wifi router range or paying for more bandwidth from your ISP, configuration or cache issues can be resolved in just a couple of minutes.
